Impossible to Ignore

Noticed But Not Seen explores our relationship with the things that surround us but often escape our attention. Moths are a familiar yet overlooked part of our everyday environment. By bringing them into a new context, the installation invites us to slow down and look more closely at something we might normally ignore. It raises questions about what catches our attention, what we overlook, and how context can change the way we perceive something.

500 moths

This installation consists of around 500 handmade moths. Each moth is carefully constructed and brought to life using crêpe paper, wire, floral tape and watercolour. By applying colour and depth by hand, no two moths are exactly alike. Each moth takes approximately thirty to sixty minutes to make.
The installation features eight different species, inspired by common moths that can be found in the Netherlands.

Light as an Essential Part

The fluorescent tubes are not merely a backdrop, but form the heart of the installation together with the moths. Their artificial light attracts the moths and determines how they gather and move throughout the space. A light source that is often perceived as cold, functional, or unattractive is given a new meaning here. The light becomes the focal point around which everything revolves: it attracts the moths, directs the visitor’s gaze, and brings nature and technology together.
