In Deconstruction of Type, Mare Knegt explores what happens when letterforms are no longer perceived as carriers of language, but as shapes. The spatial installation breaks typography down into geometric, modular elements.
Landscape of letterforms
Letters are everywhere. At their core, they form the foundation of everything we want to formulate, record, and share. In a world where we unconsciously consume vast amounts of written language every day, we primarily approach letters in a functional way.
Deconstruction of Type explores typography as a visual and spatial system rather than as a carrier of language. The visual language of the work is inspired by Bauhaus and Constructivist typography, in which reduction, geometry, and modularity are central principles. The work consists of 24 geometric basic elements, developed by deconstructing self-designed letterforms to their essence and translating them into 3D. Together, these elements form a modular system that can be used to construct the complete lowercase alphabet and other typographic forms. Within this system, meaning emerges through the combination, position, and spatial arrangement of the elements.
The installation explores how quickly we recognize forms as language, and what happens when that recognition is disrupted. Moving through a space of letterforms, typography shifts from reading to looking. When do we see a form, and when do we begin to read?
