Entangled in Adhesions

A personal story about dealing with chronic pain

Entangled in Adhesions - Sideview — © Josefina Eikenaar

Sammie created a woven tapestry telling her personal story on dealing with endometriosis and not being taken seriously in health care institutions. By depicting her raw frustration Sammie hopes to open up a conversation, where people feel free to share their story.

The Story

Entangled in Adhesions tells Sammies personal story about years of frustration due to not being taken seriously by medical professionals about problems with her menstrual cycle. Central is a woven tapestry that symbolizes the pain and challenges that many people with a uterus face. It evokes the feeling that forces outside of their body are pulling at them, as if
they’re not the ones that have control over their own bodies. Accompanying the artwork is a junk journal that captures the journey towards acceptation of chronic pain and the confusion surrounding the term endometriosis. Sammie hopes that by sharing her own story, she will encourage others to do the same and share their pain and frustration. She and her work are there to hear you anyway.

About Sammie van Dok

Hi, I'm Sammie! A 23-year-old multidisciplinary artist that created her own Universe for her art to live in. In my work I often talk about identity, body image and feminism. I use storytelling in my music and textiles to make the world a little bit softer, one string at a time.
